The Irish Institute of Master Mariners has a long-standing connection with the annual Scouting Ireland Master Mariners competition. This year’s competition was held on Saturday, 6th November 2021 hosted by 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scouts – Ringsend.

3 Ventures (age 15 – 17yrs) and 3 Rovers (age 18 – 26yrs) were examined in seamanship skills through various sessions consisting of boat handling skills, navigation, and Collision Regulations.

The IIMM had two representatives helping to examine and present the awards on the day. Capt. Tom Connery examined the entrants in chartwork, while Brian Sinnott examined them in Collision Regulations.

Ventures results

  • 1st – Kate Campion (9th Port Malahide)
  • 2nd – Niamh Lynch (9th Port Malahide)
  • 3rd – Emma Taylor (9th Port Malahide)

Rovers results

  • 1st – Daragh Hollman (7th Port Howth)
  • 2nd – Evan Banable (9th Port Malahide)
  • 3rd – Holly Quinn (7th Port Howth)

The Ventures winner (Kate Campion) was presented with the Capt. Des Fortune award by Brian Sinnott of the IIMM. Capt. Des Fortune was the first president of the Irish Institute of Master Mariners.

A great day was had by all. Each entrant must be commended on their knowledge and seamanship skills shown during the competition. The future is bright for young seafarers.
